Hutch pulled his car into the precinct driveway and smiled at the site of Thomas Myers climbing the stairs. "Hey Starsk look who's come to pay us a visit."

Starsky looked up from the magazine he was reading and said, "I wonder what he's doing back here. I thought he was staying in New York for a few more weeks."

"I guess his wife missed him and made him come back early. He said she was mad about him being temporarily transferred until the whole kidnap mess was straightened out."

Starsky felt a cold shiver run up his spine as he thought of the shooting his girlfriends sister on the yacht and the mess that lead up to that point. "God I hope he's here to say they closed the case because Heidi finally stopped having those nightmares." He smiled as he said, "She wants to have Merl look at the work she's doing on her car. She's been talking non-stop about the car for a week. She has that Charger so cranked up it may be illegal to run it on the road. I'm not sure what she's planning on doing to the Torino but she claims she can get at least twice the power out of her."

"You don't need anymore speed in that tomato, for god sakes you'll get us both killed the way you drive."

"I happened to be a very good driver and you should feel lucky that I put up with your comments and your heap we're in now."

Hutch went to make a comment as he climbed out of the car but stopped as he saw the orange Dodge Charger in the lot. "Hey Starsky isn't that Heidi's car?"

"Yeah I wonder why she parked it way back there and why did she say she was leaving early to see Merl if she was coming here?"

"Maybe she wanted to surprise you?"

"Something's up and I have a feeling I'm not going to like it."

Starsky and Hutch took the stairs two at a time and quickly entered the squad room. They were surprised to see that it was empty except for Detective Jones. Jones was an older detective with salt and pepper hair and a bad morning disposition. He was famous for teasing Starsky and Hutch to get a laugh. They were stunned by his pleasant "Good morning Hutchinson, Starsky."

Hutch looked at Starsky waiting to hear more but when no other comments came he asked, "Who died and put you in such a good mood Jones?"

"Now Hutchinson that's not nice. Here I am tying to show some respect for your partners feeling when you come in and insult me."

Starsky looked confused as he said, "What the hell are you talking about Jones?"

"I figured with what's going on with Heidi you'd be upset so I gave you some slack."

"What's going on with Heidi?"

"You really don't know?" He looked at Hutch "I thought you two knew about the investigation and were just staying out because you were to close. Man Dobey's going to kill me."

Starsky stared down Jones and said, "What investigation?"

"Someone is blackmailing Heidi and threatening her uncle. She and Some F.B.I. dude are in there now."

Starsky stormed into Dobey's office without knocking followed by Hutch. Captain Dobey stood up and yelled, "Starsky, Hutchinson what the hell do you think your doing interrupting a meeting in my office like this? Did you ever hear of knocking?"

Starsky stared at Heidi and Myers for a brief second before saying, "What the hell is going on. Who's blackmailing you and why wasn't I told."

"Because you're the reason I'm being black mailed and as hot headed as you are I figured you'd get yourself killed trying to solve the case."

"How long has this been going on?"

"Monday last week the first letter came at the paper before I arrived at work. The first set of pictures came that afternoon the second set this morning. The calls have been coming everyday since. Every time I walk into my apartment or my office at work that sick, son of bitch calls and... Dave you cannot be involved in this. You shouldn't even be here he'll know. Captain Dobey you promised to keep him out of it. I knew I shouldn't have gone to the police. I just should have given him the money and hoped he went away."

Starsky grabbed her hand and said, "Hey I don't know what the hell is going on but you can't pay blackmail and hope it will go away. He'll just keep asking for more." Starsky looked hurt as he softly asked, "Why didn't you come to me."

"He said if I told you or Hutch he'd kill you and I believe him. Dave he has pictures of everywhere you have been for the last two weeks. He keeps a closer eye on you then Hutch does. He knows where you live and where your mother lives and works."

Myres said, "I have a female agent with your mother and another agent watching Nick."

"I should have known something was wrong you haven't stopped rattling on for a week. You always rattle on when you are nervous. God I just thought you were excited about the car."

Heidi looked at Hutch who had been standing quietly in the office "Would you please take your partner somewhere safe so we can figure out what to do next."

Hutch sounded angry as he said, "We're not leaving until someone tells us exactly what the hell is going on and until I see the pictures you're talking about."

Heidi blushed as she said, "Those pictures were taken without my consent and you and your partner can see the ones of you and your partner but not the ones taken of me or Dave and I together. Myres you promised I would not have to show those pictures to anyone. I want them back now."

Myres handed Hutch a stack of pictures, turned to Heidi, and said, "There evidence and you can't have them back but no one will see them." He smiled and whispered, "I promise no one will see them without your permission." He took a stack of pictures from his briefcase and handed them to Starsky and Hutch. They flip through the pictures seeing themselves on a stakeout, at a robbery and eating lunch. Hutch asked, "How the hell did they take these?"

Starsky shrugged and said, "With a dam good zoom lens." The next pictures were of them inside the precinct sitting at their desks and Starsky raiding the candy machine. They got to a set of pictures of them in the police gym and the locker room. Hutch looked nervous as he said, "What kind of a nut would chance breaking into a police locker room to take these pictures?" He got to pictures of him and Starsky taking showers and blushed as he said, "Well this leaves nothing to the imagination. Cap how the hell did they get into a secured area to take these pictures?"

Captain Dobey answer red quietly "We've been trying to figure that out."

Heidi said "the last picture is the reason I called Myres and didn't tell you."

Hutch pulled out the last picture and felt like his knees were going to buckle out from under him. Starsky pulled the picture from his hand and saw a gloved hand holding Hutch's gun aimed at Starsky in the shower. "Holy shit. I can understand getting shot in the parking lot but what the hell kind of security do we have here where someone can pick up your partners gun and shoot you in the shower?"

Hutch looked at Starsky, "Only another cop could have taken these pictures."

Starsky said, "A rookie or a janitor would have access."

Myers said, "We've been checking on that since last Wednesday" he saw the expression on Starsky's face and quickly added "She called me Monday night in New York and explained about the letter she got that morning then the pictures that were delivered in the afternoon. The letter is signed J.B. Holstein so she thought it was a left over threat from Becky until the pictures came." He handed the letter to Starsky and added, "No prints no post mark no nothing."

The letter simply read I enjoy watching you as you move through the day and night. I know the truth about you and your lover. I can kill him at any given minute if you do not do as I say. I think you have already caused enough people to die before their time. If you even tell him about this, I promise he will be dead within the hour. I have his partner covered too. Tell either of them if you want them to die. J.B Holstein

Starsky looked at Heidi who was starting to shiver as she said "He's going to know you know and then... The phone rang causing her to jump. Dobey picked it up and in a growl said "Dobey... Who is this..." He turned to Heidi and said, "He claims to be J.B. Holstein." He put the phone on speaker and Heidi said "Hell-o"

"You told now you pay."

"Wait I didn't tell him anything we're discussing the police fund I set up."

The phone went dead and Heidi got up and said, "Oh my God I knew I just should have given him what he wants and never told anyone. Oh God now what the hell do we do?" She looked at Myres and started yelling, "I told you this would happen but you wouldn't listen now he's going to kill them. You don't even have a clue who this nut is or how he knew they were in this office. He could be anywhere."

Starsky grabbed onto Heidi, hugged her, and said, "Calm down no one is going to get killed. Look, Hutch and I have dealt with crazy people before and we know what were doing. I have no intention of being killed before the hours up."

"Dave this man was able to get into your apartment while we were there. For God sake he got into a police station."

"Why do you think he was in my apartment when we were there?" He felt her shaking in his arms and asked, "What exactly are the other photos of?"

"Dave he's going to mail them to every paper in the country. He kept your face out of the pictures so I guess your career is safe unless he has more that include your face. My career as a serious journalist is over." She forced a smile as she said, "Hell I wasn't that good at it anyway." She looked at Myres and said, "Sorry I know it's not your fault. I just want this whole mess to go away." She looked at Hutch and said, "What are the chances you two will skip the tapes and go back to what you were working on." Hutch smiled and said, "Slim to none. Heidi we're not trying to make you feel uncomfortable we just want to catch this guy."

She looked back at Myers and smiled, "I think you should ask Dave the questions you asked me to figure out when the pictures were taken."

Myers smiled back at her and said, "Starsky this investigation is going to be real personnel so if you and Hutch want to leave now would be a good time."

Starsky looked at Hutch and then at Heidi and firmly said, "We're staying."

"Okay good. We need to know when in the last two weeks this man had excess to your apartment. We know the pictures were taken in your bedroom and living room because enough of the background shows. We need to know when they were taken."

"That's easy last week we stayed at Heidi's apartment. The last five nights we've been at my place so it had to be one of those nights."

"If we can narrow it down we can check for tickets issued in the area and outdoor surveillance from the store down the road from you. We may get lucky and spot someone she's close to." He cleared his throat and said, "What night were you intimate with Heidi during the last five nights?"

Hutch watched Starsky blush as he said, "That doesn't narrow it down at all."

Hutch let out a small chuckle and then said, "What about Tuesday we worked until 1:00 on the Palmer case."

Starsky quietly said, "She was waiting up for me and you know how tense I was because we couldn't get a lead on the case."

Myers looked at Heidi who was now a bright red and said, "I think we should go over the tapes and see if there is anything we missed." He took the tapes from his briefcase and said, "The paper has a policy of recording all unidentified callers incase they use the information and are slap with a law suit later. We put a trace on her home phone and taped those calls. The conversations are short and non traceable." He put the tape into the machine and hit play.

Heidi: "Hello"

Male Voice: "Is this Miss Wilson?"

"Yes who is this?"

"A friend. Did you get the pictures?"

"How the hell did you get these pictures?"

"I watch you all the time. He thinks he's tough but I can get at him anywhere. I wanted to pull the trigger but... I can kill him at anytime. If you don't listen and do exactly as I say he and his partner will die. Remember if you tell him I'll know and he dies."

"You shouldn't let him keep you out so late. Next time try the veal."

"You shouldn't wear that skirt it's to short. You'll give people the wrong idea."

"Heidi I touched you this morning. Your back felt so soft."

"That's impossible."

"I moved his picture from the night stand to the bureau. I can be anywhere."

"Why don't you just tell me how much money you want?"

"I don't want money. He wants money I want you."

"He wants me to tell you we'll meet soon. He will arrange for a fishing boat to take you to where you will leave three million dollars in a brief case. I know you don't care about the money. You follow the instructions and then meet with me if you want to save your friends. I've missed you Heidi."

"I can't go on a boat. I'll give you the money but I can't get on a boat."

"It's okay no one will push you overboard. Remember she's dead and I won't let him hurt you."

"Who are you?"

"He knows you talked to that F.B.I. agent and he's mad. He wants me to teach you a lesson and make Dave pay."

"If you leave him alone I'll do anything you ask."

"He wants me to do him like they did Jamie. The first cuts all on the back so he'll last longer. They took the Saint Christopher metal off him and placed it in his shoe. He kept calling for you to help him. Becky flipped when she thought they grabbed the wrong kid. I tried but I couldn't help him."

"Who are you?"

"You'll know very soon."

"He wants me to tell you the boat will be here soon. I'll call tomorrow and tell you where to go and when. If you don't show up alone I have to kill the two Cops and then you'll hate me. Don't make me hurt you Heidi. I never wanted to hurt you."

"I'll need time to get the money. The bank doesn't just keep that kind of money on hand."

"Do you remember the way the roses smell at night in the garden? I promise they will be roses when we make love. I'll prove I can make you happy and I'll be better for you then him you'll see."

Myers stopped the tape machine and said, "The next two calls came this morning." He turned the machine back on.

"Hello"

"You slut. How could you let him touch you like that knowing what we have? How could you betray me with him? He doesn't love you the way I do. You had better have that money tomorrow morning or it's going to be my pleasure to kill him. The last time we were going to be together that little tramp showed up instead of you. I cut her up the way he said I should cut you. She looked so much like you I didn't mind making love to her first. I kept one of her earrings for you. She was good but I know you'll be better. I didn't wait all this time for nothing."

"I'm sorry I yelled at you earlier this morning. I know he must have tricked you into sleeping with him. Holstein said the boat will be at pier 17 on Saturday morning at exactly 10:00. He will stop long enough for you to get on. Heidi if you don't get on the boat with the money they're dead."

"Please I can't I can't get on a boat."

"You'll be safe I won't let them hurt you."

"You don't understand I can't get on a boat."

"You have to or your boyfriend and his partner are dead. I promise I'll protect you like before. He won't let me call you again unless something new comes up but I'll be watching you and the cop. Heidi don't let him touch anymore. I'll know and I'll stop him. If you make love to him again I'll kill them both."

"I won't let him touch me if you promise not to hurt him."

"I won't hurt him if you don't let him touch you again."

Myers stopped the machine and said, "That's all we have. We did a profile on him and they said he's from New York between 25 and 35. He is obsesses with Heidi and sees you as a threat. They believe he's a heavy drug user because of the way his thought pattern is working."

Starsky ran his hand threw Heidi's hair and said, "He knows you from New York. He talked about how you love the smell of the roses at night. You told me that when we were sitting in your grandmothers gardens. He knows why you're afraid to get on a boat and he said he misses you which means he once knew you. He called James Jamie and Rebecca Becky like he knew them. Myers is what he said about James Saint Christopher metal and Jill's earring true?"

"Yeah and that information was never released so only someone involved could have known. He had to have been there when James was killed and he confessed to the rape and murder of Jill Rivers."

Starsky could feel Heidi shivering, took his leather jacket off, and wrapped it around her. He kissed her on the top of her head and asked, "Are you okay?"

"No silly I'm not okay. I have some nut case threatening you and Hutch and trying to convince me he'll protect me like he claims he did before..." She suddenly remembered the comment made by Tommy Gratin Someday you'll thank me for it. She remembered the night before she was sitting with him in the garden telling him how she loved the way the roses smelt at night and sharing their first kiss. "We were in the garden the night before James was kidnapped. He made me late to protect me from Becky and Rego and he always called him Jamie."

Myers asked, "Who?"

"Tommy Gratin. He was Rego's cousin we were going to go by his parent's grocery store before everything went nuts in New York."

Myers pulled the file from the New York out of his brief case and looked for the report. "Yeah he was arrested for burglary. He was supposed to be one of New York's best a cat burglar. He could take the rings right off your finger and never wake you. He was busted when he tripped a silent alarm in a penthouse apartment. He skipped bail and has been missing for three years."

Hutch grabbed the phone and dialed Huggy's number "Huggy we need your help. I can't get into it on the phone but we need to find a Tommy Gratin he's a cat burglar out of New York who likes to cut people up... Seems he wants to fillet Starsky to get to Heidi... I'm not sure I guess we'll be in Dobey's office for awhile... Thanks Huggy I will."

He turned to Starsky and said, "Huggy's going to make some calls he'll call us back here."

Starsky looked at Myers and said, "Now if we can figure out who J.B. Holstein is we'll be all set. What do we have from the bank surveillance films?"

"The photos have been enlarged but so far nothing just a white male grey hair and mustache. He looks like he is avoiding the cameras. The outside camera has him getting into a cab but that is no help because the cab log says he got in three blocks away and got drop off at the same location. It's an abandoned house. The money is being transferred to a Swiss account. I have been over the slides a hundred times. Maybe you can spot something." He turned the slide projector on and shut the lights off. He started flipping through the slides and making comments, "Different cab each time but the same outfit, watch and rings. The jewelry is just dime store junk." He got to the outside shots. "These last shots are from after you left New York. Different cab drivers and nothing unusual in the back ground."

When the last two slides were shown Starsky felt Heidi lean into him as if she were going to faint. He quickly supported her and said, "You need to sit down. Are you going to be okay?" He sat her in a chair and Hutch brought her a cup of water and said, "You're as white as a ghost." He looked back at the slide and asked her, "Do you recognize anyone in the photo?"

Heidi looked at the floor and said, "No"

Hutch looked at Starsky and then asked her, "Did you recognize a car in the background."

"No." she looked at Starsky and trembled as she said, "I don't know any of the people in the photo and I don't know any of the cars. I have to... I have to get to work um I have a column due and I have to check out some information and do some stuff." She turned to Captain Dobey and asked, "Can I leave now."

Captain Dobey looked puzzled as he said, "I thought we were supposed to meet with the commissioner about the fund when we were done."

"You could just give him the check for me and tell him I'll call later. I just don't feel good and I need to go. Um I really have to get to work and I'll be at the paper if you need me." She stood up slowly and felt as if her legs were rubber.

Starsky gently push her into the chair saying, "Until we find Tommy you're not going anywhere."

"Dave, Tommy won't hurt me. You're the one he wants to kill." She looked back at the slide and firmly said, "Unless I'm under arrest I'm leaving."

Starsky looked at Hutch before saying, "We need to talk now." He helped her up and out of the office. When he saw the squad room was empty, he quickly asked her, "What the hell just happened in there."

She was looking at the floor and said, "Nothing I just need to leave."

He gentle lifted her face and said, "Talk to me."

"Dave I need you let me leave please. I just need to check something out and then I promise I'll tell you."

"There is no way I'm letting you leave like this."

"I'm not a little kid and I don't need your permission to leave. I have an agent waiting for me downstairs and she'll drive me to paper so you can relax." She handed him back his leather jacket and said, "Dave I'll be fine I promise."

Myers walked into the squad room and said, "Helen is on her way up I told her not to let you drive until you feel better. Heidi I need to talk with you later so I'll meet you at the Newspaper. I've already told Agent Cole you're not to leave the paper until I get there."

"Are you expecting me to hop the company jet to New York?"

"No the jets in New York I checked this morning."

"I have no intention of going to New York with out you. I just need to check something out to be sure I'm wrong."

"Don't you mean to be sure you're not wrong?"

She quietly mumbled "No I need to be wrong." She looked at Starsky and said, "You be careful because I need you and if you go get yourself killed I'll never forgive you." She saw agent Helen Cole enter the office hugged him and whispered, "Keep a close eye on Ken" Starsky waited until she left the office and said, "We need to blow those slides up and see what we're missing."

Starsky finished helping the police photographer enlarge each section of the picture of the last three photos. The windows were down in the cab so he could make out the cab driver and all the cars in the background as well as the inside of the cab. The last photo was the cab leaving with a man standing near the rear of the cab. He enlarged the man's face and said, "She couldn't have recognized him with out seeing this enlarged" He stared at the picture of the cab and said, "There has to be something here." He could see the dogs head sticking out of the cab window and the drivers face. He could make out some of the people in the background. He grabbed the pictures and headed back to Dobey's office. He put the pictures on the desk and said, "There is something here I just can't find it."

Myrers looked at the photos and said, "I can run the picture of the man and the driver through R&I and hope we get a hit."

Hutch said, "She said she didn't recognize any of the people or cars in the photo. Do you think she was lying?"

Starsky said, "No but the way she stated rambling I know something scared her. I just can't figure out what she saw." He looked closely at the dog in the window and turned on the slide projector putting the slide back in. He shut the lights off and said, "You can see the dog clear as day and it's a German Shepard." He looked at Hutch and said, "Bobby is a German Shepard."

Hutch quickly added, "Her Uncle Jack has Bobby. That doesn't make any sense Heidi gave him power over all the companies and millions of dollars why would he be embezzling from the company."

"Maybe he wanted it all or maybe it's personal."

Myers said, "What did she say about the day Rebecca threw her off the boat?"

Starsky said, "He told her he saw her fall, but he's the one who jumped in and saved her."

Myers was heading for the door as he said, "She was only five when he saved her. Maybe now that she's an adult he considers her a threat."

Heidi was sitting at her desk on the phone when Myers, Hutch and Starsky walked in. She didn't notice them standing in the doorway as she said, "I'm glad you take him everywhere with you I've been worried about him since I left New York. He's a pretty smart dog and I just miss him... Yeah maybe I'll do that... Yeah I could probably fly out tomorrow and be back for Friday night... No I have to be some where Saturday morning... No I'm fine just tired. I'll let you know. Good-bye." She hung the phone up and wiped the tears from her eyes. She looked up and saw the three men standing in the doorway. She purposely avoided looking at Starsky as she said, "He takes Bobby everywhere he goes. That's why he was in the photo. I'm going to New York when the jet comes in tomorrow. I'm going to have to see the attorneys and make some changes in the company. I'll tell Nicky you guys said hi when I see him and you can tell Tommy I said hi when you see him."

Starsky asked, "Can you give us a minute." Hutch and Myers backed away as he closed the door and said, "I know you're hurting but it will be alright?"

"No it won't." She looked at him and said, "We can pretend all we want that it's okay but we both know what this means."

Starsky smiled at her and in his best Bogart impression said, "Come on schweetheart we'll find a way to make it work."

"I'm scared that... you can't fix this. I can't be in two places at ones and in order to run the company I have to be in New York. Over 100,000 people work for the company and rely on the company to support their families. I can't just shut it down and pretend I don't care. This can't work. I love you and I can't stand the thought of living without you but I have to say good-bye."

"Hey wait a minute we're not even sure your uncle did it. There are people you can hire to run the company." He stepped towards her but she backed away. "What are you really afraid of?"

"I'm scared I'll get you killed?" She looked into his eyes "If Tommy doesn't kill you to get to me someone else will." Tears were falling down her checks as she said, "You're a target with a big bull's-eye on your back. I know your jobs dangerous and I can deal with the fact you could get killed everyday you walk out the door but I can't deal with the fact that you're going to be killed because of me."

"I love you and I know you're scared but we can fix this. Huggy has a lead on Tommy and we are going to arrest him. Don't you realize I have the same fear? Ever since what happened to Terry it is constantly in the back of my mind that I may piss the wrong person off and he'll come after you to get even with me. The only thing that makes that pain bearable is the look on your face when I come home at night. The way you look at me when we make love, the way you smile at me when you wake up."

"I don't want you to get hurt."

"So we'll tell Blondie he needs to be extra careful covering my back. I love you and I'm not letting go that easy." He wrapped his arms around her and said, "You're stuck with me schweetheart." He wiped her tears with his thumbs and kissed her. You want to talk to Myers about what you learned or do you want me do it for you."

"No I'll tell him. Dave promise you'll be careful and won't go after Tommy. Let Myers and the F.B.I. do it please."

"I'll be careful but Hutch and I are going to take Tommy down than we are going to pay a little visit to your uncle and find out just who J.B. Holstein is." He smiled and said, "You can introduce me to Bobby after all he did help us get together."

Hutch knocked on the door and opened it asking, "Is it safe to come in?"

"Yeah we have to go to The Pit to find out what Huggy has but I'll pick you up here when you're done."

"I need to follow up on a lead I have for a column."

"What lead?"

"You know the column I've been writing on the school budget. I got a call from someone who claims he has proof Chandler is taking the money."

"Who's the source?"

"I don't know I'm meeting him at the Pier at 11:00 so get going or you'll make me late."

"Take Helen with you." He said as he kissed her good-bye.

"I intend to so she can guard my car."

The Pit was all but empty when Hutch, Starsky and Myers arrived. Huggy was tending bar so the three men all took a stool at the end of the bar. Hutch asked, "What did you find Huggy."

"Well my blonde brother your man goes by the name Tommy Peterson and is buying more horse then anyone else on the street. He's pretty weird with the ladies too. He has half the girls in Lou's stable freaked out. Makes um wear a long brown wig and likes hand cuffs and whips. Two of the girls he uses are missing" Huggy shook his head "Mans got some serious bread he's spreading around."

Starsky said, "Huggy you got an address?"

"Yeah he's staying down on the docks at that dump they called the Pier."

Starsky looked at his watch and said, "It's 11:15 he's got Heidi." All three men got up and ran out the door not even responding to Huggy's comment, "Was it something I said?"

Heidi walked up to room 245 and knocked on the door saying to Helen, "You could have waited in the car I'll be fine." She knocked on the door again and a voice asked, "Who is it?"

"It's Heidi Wilson we spoke on the phone about the school budget."

The door opened and Heidi and Helen came face to face with Tommy holding a colt 45. He calmly said, "Get in." He shut the door behind the girls and fired a shot into Helens head. He grabbed Heidi's hand and pulled her into the connecting room where she saw a bedroom with several dozen roses. He shut the door behind him and locked it. He turned to Heidi and said, "I knew you come to see me as soon as you realized he was wrong for you. I told you there would be roses when we made love."

"You killed her. Why did you kill her?"

"She was evil she's been following you everywhere. I think she was hired to hurt you."

"Tommy you're confused. Helen was a friend trying to protect me. You killed her."

Tommy screamed, "Stop saying that." He picked up the needle from the nightstand and looked at Heidi, "I can help you see clearly. You and I were supposed to be together all this time. He promised I could have you."

"Tommy put the needle down."

"It only hurts the first time and then you welcome it."

"Please put the needle down and we can we talk about things."

"Talk about what?"

"What ever you want to talk about if you put the needle down I'll tell you anything you want to hear."

He stopped moving forward and lowered the gun "Tell me how much you missed me and how much you love me."

"Do you remember our first date? It was nice and you were so sweet. You took me to that little Italian place for pizza."

"I remember it was the Leaning Tower of Pizza. They had all those pictures of Italy and you said you wanted to go there."

"That right they had pictures of the gondolas and you said you would take me for a ride in one when school was over."

"We went for a walk in your grandmother's garden and you said you loved the roses and the way they made the night air smell." He suddenly moved closer to her and she backed into the wall begging, "Tommy put the needle down please."

He lowered the needle, lifted the gun to her head, and said, "I'll drop the needle if you make love to me. Just kiss me, let me touch you and I'll put it down."

She ignored the hand with the gun and used both her hands to grab his left hand with the needle. She pushed on the needle causing the contents to spray out while screaming, "Tommy stop please put it down." She managed to get him to drop the needle but he grabbed her by the neck with his hand and smashed her head into the wall. She was struggling to breathe and was on the verge of passing out when he finally let go. He picked her up and laid her on the bed. He tore open her shirt as she screamed and tried to push him off. He pointed the gun at her face and said, "I didn't wait all this time for you to turn me down." He reached into the nightstand and pulled out several sets of handcuffs. He laid the gun on the nightstand and pressed all his weight on her as he put the cuffs on her right hand then cuffed her to the bed. He reached inside her bra and she screamed and kicked him while hitting her left hand. The door burst open and she felt him being pulled off her. Starsky got in several punches before Hutch and Myers pulled him off. Hutch was yelling "Starsk your going to kill him."

Starsky got up and went over to Heidi holding her tightly. He released her hand with his key and pulled her close rocking her while saying "It's okay your save he can't hurt you anymore."

Myers took Tommy from the room in handcuffs. Hutch picked up the needle off the floor and looked at the contents. He looked at the bureau, saw the candle, spoon and heroin, and panicked. He went over to Heidi and asked, "Did he use the needle on you?"

Heidi looked dazed as she said "He had a needle."

Hutch yelled loudly, "Heidi did he stick you with the needle?"

She shook her head and managed to say, "He tried to but... no" She pressed her head back against Starsky's chest as she said, "He killed her. She didn't even pull her gun and he killed her." Starsky could feel her trembling so he pulled the blanket off the bed and wrapped her in it. She looked up at him and said, "He wouldn't... wouldn't let go. I tried... but he wouldn't let go."

"Shh he's gone and he's never going to hurt you again."

Hutch opened the door to the cedar chest and stepped back in horror. He turned to Starsky and said, "Starsk I think you should get her out of here."

Starsky got up, walked over to the cedar closet, and examined the pictures taped to the inside. They were pictures of Jill Rivers and two other women both before and after they were murdered and old black and white pictures of a small boy. There were four stacks of photos in both color and black and white. One stack was the pictures they had seen at the precinct. Two of the stacks had pictures of the women and the small boy and one stack was full of pictures of Heidi in the shower and making love to Starsky. Starsky took the negatives and the stack of pictures of Heidi and stuffed them in his jacket pocket. Hutch grabbed his hand and said, "Starsk this could be a murder scene and those pictures are evidence." Their eyes met and he said, "You could loose your job."

Starsky looked back at Heidi and said, "You know how many people will see these pictures in the evidence room."

"Starsk she can't leave until Myers talks to her but you have to get the pictures out now."

Starsky walked back to Heidi and said, "Honey I need to leave for a few minutes but I promise I'll be right back. You have to stay with Hutch."

She took the pictures from his pocket and said, "Dave it's to late Myers and Dobey have the copies." She went to put the pictures back and froze at the sight of her brother James. She dropped the pictures in her hand, took the stack of James picture, and flipped through the pictures. She sat down on the bed and held the pictures to her chest. Starsky tried to take the pictures but she held them tightly. He softly asked, "Are those pictures of your brother James."

"Dave, He didn't take these pictures." She showed Starsky the picture of James sitting in the dentist chair being grabbed by two men. "I was with Tommy when they first took him."

"Heidi give me the pictures you shouldn't look at those."

"I need to see them because there's something here I can feel it." Tears fell on the pictures as she looked at them. "I know these people. They were friends of Becky and Will. They came to the funeral and cried liked they cared." When she got to the last picture she asked, "Where is Tommy?"

Starsky looked at Hutch and said, "Myers has him he can't hurt you anymore."

Heidi stopped crying and handed all the pictures but one to Starsky. She stood up angrily saying, "I have to see Tommy now."

"Heidi you need to calm down you've been through a lot and you need to sit down."

She yelled, "I need to see him now."

Myers came in the room with Tommy in handcuffs and said, "Heidi are you okay?"

She looked at Tommy and said, "Why did he let them kill James?"

Tommy stared at her briefly before saying, "He was high on angle dust and horse when he first told us what he was planning. By the time he was coming down it was too late to stop what he started. He said you two were in his way. Frank told Becky it was his plan and only told her you would be taken. She helped because she thought it was just going to be you. They were supposed to grab you both but I made you late so they couldn't get you. Franky took the pictures so he could keep them all quiet about what they did. By the time I got to the clubhouse Jamie was already half dead. I took the last picture then took the film so he could not hurt you. I told him if you got hurt, I'd turn the pictures over to the police and he'd be up for planning the whole thing. He has been paying me ever since just waiting for a chance to get those photos back. He sent Franky to get you at the apartment and I tried to stop him but she looked like you and she felt soft like you. He was right there is no high like the one you get from killing. He was mad when he found out we killed the wrong girl. Franky had no idea until he got back to New York. He said I could have you after I took the pictures he wanted. He was going to make sure I could keep you forever."

"Tommy I have to know why."

"Your grandmother caught Becky and him stealing money and using drugs and said she was disinheriting them. She was going to send him away but he knew if she didn't have you and James she'd have to settle for him and Becky. You have to understand they were all stoned and didn't realize what they were doing. After Jamie died, he kept talking to him telling him to get up the game was done. He thought the Saint Christopher metal was talking to him so he stuffed it in the shoe to keep it quiet. He didn't touch the stuff again for years. Becky and Rego got him high two years ago to celebrate his birthday and he couldn't stop."

"You sat at my nana's house with me for three days pretending you cared about Jamie but you stood there and took pictures while he killed him. You said you did it to protect me because you loved me but if you cared anything about me, you would have said something. When you helped kill Jamie, you killed a part of me. I hate you."

"No you love me and when this is all over we'll be together you'll see."

"If it takes every cent I own I'll see you rot in prison and if you slip through the cracks I'll hunt you down if it takes the rest of my life."

Starsky grabbed Heidi as she started pounding on Tommy's chest crying, "I wish you were dead."

Myers pulled Tommy out of the room and Starsky held Heidi's trembling body against him saying, "It's over he's gone it's all over." Heidi let the picture in her hand fall to the floor as Starsky held her. Hutch picked the picture up and saw a teen-age boy slicing a young boy's throat. The sight made his stomach turn. The fact it was Heidi's brother Jamie made it worse. The older boy somehow looked familiar to Hutch. He stared at the face and realized the boy looked like Becky and Heidi. He stared at Heidi and said, "Oh God this is Will isn't it." Starsky felt Heidi go limp and called to the officer in the other room, "Bernie I need a paramedic in here."

Myers handed Tommy to another officer and came back into the room. Hutch handed him the picture and said, "Do you know if this is her brother Will."

"Yeah that's him." He looked at Hutch and asked, "Did you show her this picture?"

Hutch sounded defensive as he said, "Of course not she picked the pile up and wouldn't let go of this one. I think she's in shock."

The paramedic came in and asked Starsky, "Hi Starsky do you know her name?"

"Heidi. We've been going out for a while. Roy is she okay?"

He leaned over her and said, "Heidi I'm a paramedic can you open your eyes for me." The paramedic examined Heidi and asked, "What did he hit her head with?"

Starsky looked stunned as he said, "I don't know I didn't know her head was hurt."

The paramedic said, "There's no blood but she has a large lump. Was she having trouble focusing, walking or was she unconscious at any point?"

"I don't know. When we got here, he was on top of her on the bed. She's been shaking a lot but I thought it was because she was scared. He had her cuffed to the bed and he tried to stick her with a needle."

The paramedic checked her arms asking, "Are you sure he didn't inject her?"

"She said he tried but didn't."

"Her pupils are responding so it could be a concussion. I need to get her to the hospital so they can run some test." He looked at Starsky and said, "You can come in the ambulance with me just try and stay out of the way."

Starsky looked at Hutch who said, "Go I got this covered. Myers and I'll will tag everything ourselves don't worry about the pictures just take care of Heidi."

Myers was picking the pictures up off the floor and said, "These are copies of the ones we have the ones of Jill Rivers, James and the girls I've never seen. Do you have any idea who the other girls are?"

"Huggy told us he was getting weird around the prostitutes. I'll show him the pictures maybe he can I.D. the other two girls."

"When we finish here I want to go talk to our friend Tommy and see how much he knows about J.B. Holstein."

"Take your time the longer he goes without a fix the easier it will be to get the information out of him."

"God dam Junkies would give up their own mother for a fix if they're hurting bad enough."

Hutch thought of Forrest, telling him about where Jeannie was hiding to get a fix. "Yeah I guess if you're hurting for a fix bad enough you'd give up anything."

"You okay you look pale even for you?"

Hutch smiled as he said, "I'm deathly afraid of needles they freak me out. Heidi has quite a family doesn't she?"

"I think that's why she hates the money so much. It makes some people do crazy things. From what she's told me she thinks it's hereditary and sooner or later she become like the rest of them."

"That crazy she the sweetest person I've ever met."

"Think about from her point. Her dad and mom were killed in and accident rushing to some expensive fundraiser. Her brother was kidnap for money; her sister tried to kill her for money and managed to kill the grandmother instead. Her grandfather worked himself into and early grave making all this money. Now she finds out her brother Will killed James for money. For all we know her Uncle Jack is J.B. Holstein and has been stealing money from the company for several years. I think I'd hate money too."

"No wonder she was hiding who she is all that time. I'll bet that has a lot to do with why she said she never wants to have children." He started to smile as he said, "Starsky's been working on changing her mind on that one. He keeps asking her to get married so they can have little Starsky's running around."

Myers looked at Hutch and laughed as he said, "If there as energetic as Starsky is I'd feel sorry for Heidi."

"He does make life interesting. His mom says he's calmed down tremendously from when he was a kid. No wonder the woman has grey hair."

He handed Hutch two stacks of pictures saying, "Hutchinson since we already have copies of these pictures why don't you make sure they get destroyed. I think it will help if Heidi knows there gone. She could use a little good news."

"Maybe Tommy can tell us all about Holstein and we can finally end this once and for all."

"What do you think Starsky will do if both Will and Jack are involved and Heidi has to take over the company?"

"I don't honestly know. Being a cop use to be everything to Starsky but since he finally figured out he was in love with Heidi I'm not sure." Hutch looked distant as he said, "I guess I just avoided thinking about it until now. It would be strange not having him around."

Tommy was starting to show signs of withdrawal when he was brought to the interrogation room. He was sweating and shaking slightly. Myers took the lead saying, "Gee Tommy you've only been here ninety minutes and you're already looking rough. If you tell us what we want to know you can get your bail hearing and go home, stick that needle in and feel good again."

Tommy lit a cigarette and said, "What do want to know?"

Hutch asked the first question, "What happened to Heidi's head?"

"She banged it on the wall when we were getting intermit."

"You mean when you tried to rape her?"

"No. No way she loves me you and that partner of yours just have her confused."

Hutch slammed his hands on the table and leaned forward saying, "She hates you because of what you did to Jamie."

"I never touched Jamie. Will killed him. Franky cut his back up and the other four people took turns cutting him but I never touched him. She loved Jamie I couldn't hurt him."

"What about Jill and the other two girls."

"They were sluts. They pretended to be Heidi but they were not. They made me think I was making love to Heidi but then when it was over and I knew they made me cheat on her they had to die so Heidi would forgive me. They had to be punished for not being Heidi."

Myers asked him "Whose idea was it to use J.B. Holstein's name?"

"Becky came up with that one after her grandmother paid the ransom. She said that he still had a small account at the bank. She found the book in the attic when we were getting high. She went to bank and put some money in to make sure it was still active. She started putting the ransom in a few thousand every week and then when her and Will got older they took money from the company and then had it sent to some overseas bank."

"Who want to the bank dressed as the old man?"

"That was Franky. I didn't know it was him the first time I saw him all dressed up in the wig and old cloths."

"Did they ever withdraw money from the account?"

"That's were Will got my bail money from. He and Becky would send me $5000 every month to keep the pictures off the front page of the paper. Franky liked being in the middle even after him and Becky said they parted company."

"After Franky and Becky died who went to bank?"

"I don't know I just know up until now the payments kept coming."

"Who told you to take the pictures of Heidi and Starsky?"

"Will called and said he was having trouble getting the money from the company because of all the new regulations. He said if I took the pictures, she would pay him the money. He said if I got him the three million dollars I could come back to New York with her and the cop would be out of the picture."

"Why did you have Heidi come to your place instead of waiting until Saturday?"

"She sounded too scared of the boat. I was afraid if his people took her out on a boat, I would never see her again. I promised to protect her and I couldn't let Will hurt her. Then when I saw him tricking her into making love to him I knew I had to get her away from that cop before he hurt her."

"How did you get into police gym?"

"That was easy. I took a uniform from a rookie's house and walked in with the group. You really do need to improve the security there. I could have shot that cop and no one would know."

"Why didn't you shoot him?"

"Will said if I hurt the cop there would be a full investigation and he'd loose everything. He said if we didn't hurt the cop Heidi would give us the money. If he got caught he would have had Heidi killed." He looked at Hutch and asked, "Don't you see I saved her from being kidnapped so she belongs to me only me. She can't love him because she's mine. You need to tell him to stay away from my girlfriend or I'll have to hurt him."

Myers looked at Hutch and then back at Tommy saying, "You're going to be booked for three counts of kidnapping and murder for the girls at the apartment and kidnapping and attempted rape of Heidi Wilson. The kidnapping and murder of Agent Helen Cole, impersonating a police officer, trespass on a restricted area of the police station and anything else I can think of on the way to booking."

Hutch chimed in "You forgot blackmail and breaking and entering for his little visit to Starsky's place."

"I'm sure with the help of the D.A. Captain Dobey and Starsky we'll have even more charge to follow."

Tommy looked at Hutch and asked, "Can I have my bail hearing soon I need to get back to my apartment."

Hutch smiled as he said, "As long as there are no wants or warrants out for your arrest you should be home for supper in the year 2050."

Myers laughed and said, "Yeah if anyone like say New York had a charge of say burglary against you they may not issue you bail. Flight risk you know."

Starsky was sitting in Heidi's room as Hutch walked through the door with a huge bouquet of flowers. Starsky smiled as he said, "You never bring me flowers when I get hurt."

Hutch smiled at Heidi and said, "That's because you're not my type." He kissed Heidi on the forehead and said, "When are you getting out we have some celebrating to do."

"If you give me my cloths I can ready in ten minutes."

Hutch looked at Starsky who said, "There keeping her overnight for observation besides not all the test results are back yet."

Hutch asked her, "Are you really okay?"

"I'm fine they're just being over cautious." She looked at Starsky, "This will be the first time in three weeks we don't spend the night together. Feels kind of weird."

Starsky smiled, "I'm not going anywhere until you can come with me besides I think that doctor has a thing for you."

She looked at Hutch and said, "This is why they kicked him out of the emergency room. He was driving the all the doctors crazy. When they asked if they could call my doctor to get the results from my physical last week he asked why they needed to know. He thinks yelling at the doctors is going to help. After they talked to my doctor, they suggested I stay and made him leave. They said he was worse then when you got shot."

Starsky smiled as he said, "She's rambling so I know something's wrong."

"Ken I'm fine so what are we celebrating anyway?"

"Bobby was in the picture taken on the fifth but guess who had Bobby while your Uncle Jack went to London for a week on the third."

Heidi looked at Hutch and asked, "Will had Bobby not Uncle Jack?"

"Will had Bobby for the whole week and your Uncle Jack had nothing to do with it. He had a private investigation team and an outside accounting firm checking the books. That's why Will turned to you for the money. He knew there was no way he could take a dime without getting caught."

"Uncle Jack had nothing to do with it. Are you sure?"

"I'm positive Heidi. He's taking the jet out here tomorrow to make sure that you're alright."

Heidi sat up quickly to kiss Hutch but got dizzy. She leaned back against the pillow for a second before saying, "Boy are you going to get a hug when I feel better."

"I'd be happy to collect that hug anytime."

She looked somewhat sad as she asked, "What's going to happen to Will."

"The F.B.I. sent someone out to pick him up. He and the other people in the pictures will be charged with your brother James' Murder."

"What about Tommy?"

"He's going away for the rest of his life and then some. Myers charged him with everything but jaywalking." He started to laugh as he said, "Starsky he asked me to tell you to leave his girlfriend alone until he gets out."

"Don't think so blintz. If I have my way I'm going to married to the woman have a lot of little Starsky's and grow old and grey together."

The doctor walked in, looked at Starsky and Hutch, and politely said, "Would you mind waiting outside so I could talk with my patient for a moment."

Starsky looked at Heidi and asked, "Do you want me to leave?"

She took his hand, shook her head, and said to the doctor "Can he stay please. Either way I want him here."

"It's your choice if you want him here that's fine. The tests we ran confirm your doctor was right you do have an ulcer. We still have a few tests your doctor asked us to run but if you stay in bed and avoid stress for a few days, we should be able to get that blood pressure under control. There is no reason you cannot go back to work in a few days. We have the results to the blood test we ran as a precaution. I'm sorry Heidi the pregnancy test was negative." Heidi looked down at the blanket but didn't say anything. Starsky made eye contact with Hutch then looked back at Heidi. The doctor took her hand and said, "What we discussed downstairs is just between friends and off the record but if you ever need anyone to talk to give me a call."

Heidi smiled as the tears ran down her face. "You've been a big help."

The doctor left and Hutch said, "I need to get some coffee. I'll be back a little later."

Heidi looked up at Hutch and said, "It's okay Ken you don't need to go. Besides I want you to take Dave home." She looked at Hutch briefly, "Don't worry everything is going to be fine."

"I thought you didn't want to a baby why are you so upset?"

"Dave you have it all wrong. I was afraid of having a baby because I thought my whole family was evil that somehow I had this hereditary disorder that I could pass on but Uncle Jack isn't evil so it's okay." She felt dizzy and closed her eyes.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothings wrong my head just hurts. Dave I was really scared when they told me what they were testing for. I wasn't thinking straight because I just found out what Will did and I thought Uncle Jack helped and after Becky I got scared and told the doctor I didn't know if I want to be pregnant. The more we talked the more I realized I did want to be."

Starsky looked at Hutch who was staring out the window looking very uncomfortable. He looked back at Heidi and said, "Why don't we get married and work on making that test positive."

"I'm a woman with a homicidal family. I've been watched, photographed naked while making love and just saw pictures of my little brother being killed by my older brother. All I could think when they said they needed to check to see if I was pregnant was what kind of mental disorder did I pass to this child. I was scared but I love you I know how much you want children. I'm scared Dave what if I become like Becky and Will." She laid back against the pillow and put her palm to her head.

"I know you're nothing like Becky and you're not a drug using murderer like Will. You are a sweet, lovable, beautiful woman who can tune a car engine better than I can. You are sexy and you make me smile no matter how bad this crazy world gets. I love you and I want you to be my wife." He smiled at her with tear-filled eyes and said, "Will you marry me?"

"I can't" she bit her bottom lip and tried to stop the tears from flowing but couldn't. She looked into Starsky eyes and said, "We can't because both of us are targets. I can't watch what happen to Jamie happen to our children and you know as well as I do it will happen. You have people from your past that would hurt our children without thinking twice and just being my child makes them a target for every kidnapper out there. I wish to God you could tell me I'm wrong but you can't."

Starsky said, "I can quit the force."

"You can't stop being a cop anymore then you could stop breathing. It's who you are it's one of the things I love about you. More then anything in the world I want you to tell me I'm wrong our kids would be safe but you can't can you."

"I can't tell the future and neither can you. You can't give up on us I won't let you."

"So where do we go from here?"

"I'm not sure I guess we take it one day at a time. We do everything we can to stay safe in this crazy world. The one thing I'm sure of is I'd rather live only one day with you then a hundred years without you. I'm not saying it will be easy but if we love each other we can work it out. So unless you're prepared to look me in the eyes and tell me you don't love me I'm not going anywhere and neither are you." He wiped the tears away from her eyes and said, "So will you marry me?"

"You're sure you want to take the risk?"

He smiled and winked at her as he said, "I do"

She smiled back at him and said, "Let's call your mother and tell her she's going to a wedding."

Starsky kissed her passionately then said, "Hutch you should go get that coffee because my girl and I are going to neck." He turned back to Heidi and said, "You ever make love in a hospital bed."

"Dave you are crazy the nurse will walk in on us."

He saw her clinch her teeth from the pain of moving her head and said, "You need to get some sleep slide over and we'll take a nap."

Hutch said, "I'll see you two later. I have to go back the precinct and do the paperwork on this mess. If you behave I'll sneak you in a burger and some fries." He smiled as he shut the light off and closed the door. He walked down the hallway smiling thinking about all the little curly headed Starsky's that would soon be running around.
