WHY NOT ME?

It was dark. Roaring water drowned out the partners' words, but they were close enough for a gaze to define trust. Hutch removed his gun from its holster and handed it to Starsky. Then lightly touching wet curls he said, "You'll only be a word away."

"A bullet's faster, Hutch."

"We decided."

"We? No we didn't. You..." Starsky stopped. Arguing was useless when Hutch clamped that stubborn mouth. He was right anyway. They had no choice.

Hutch turned and walked to the waiting car.

Starsky grasp the tiny new device in his hand. Hutch's lifeline. "Shit partner, why not me?"
