CRAVING

by: Mary Miller

"Hello."

"Hey Hutch, ya wanna come over tonight? I figured we could have a coupla beers and watch the ballgame."

"Okay, I'll be there in an hour. I have this craving I need to take care of first," said Hutch before hanging up the phone.

"Craving for what?" yelled a nervous Starsky into the dead receiver before he grabbed his jacket and ran out the door. He sped towards Hutch's place, scanning the streets and sidewalks for any sign of his partner. He was frantic with worry by the time he spotted his best friend getting into his car carrying a small bag. The brakes of his car squealed as he pulled up to the curb and parked behind Hutch's car. He climbed over his hood, opened up the passenger door of his friend's car and plopped down on the seat beside him.

"What's going on?" asked a confused Hutch. "I told you I'd be over in an hour."

"You said you had a cravin'," said Starsky trying to catch his breath.

"I did," he said grabbing the bag from the back seat and removing its contents.

"Ice cream?" asked Starsky in disbelief. "You're craving was for ice cream?"

"Ya, chocolate chip, my favorite. You want some?"

Starsky put one hand on the dashboard and one on his forehead.

Hutch gently squeezed Starsky's shoulder.

"Buddy, did you think I was craving drugs?"

"Ya, could you do me a favor and not use the word cravin' when you're talkin' about ice cream?"

"I promise. Now, how about helping me eat this stuff? I've got some spoons and there's plenty for both of us."

A very relieved Starsky smiled. "Okay."

Hutch handed Starsky one of the spoons and opened the container.

"This is really good," said Starsky after his first spoonful.

"Mmmm, it sure is," said Hutch digging in for another spoonful of the frozen confection.

They continued sharing the treat until the container was empty.

"Meet me at my place?" asked Starsky as he opened the car door.

"Are you sure you still want me to come over?"

"Of course I am blondie."

"I'm sorry."

"Forget it, I guess I'm still a little nervous after everything that happened to you."

"Us Starsk, it happened to us. You were as affected by my being strung out as I was."

"That was pretty obvious tonight wasn't it?"

"It shows you care."

"I'm gonna leave before you start gettin' soapy on me," said Starsky as he got out of the car.

"Okay, I'll see you in fifteen minutes."

"See ya."
